WOOD DECKS

When it comes to deck-building, wood is the age-old standard. Nothing can match the timeless beauty of a properly-constructed wooden deck, and when properly maintained, a wood deck can last for decades. If you're looking for uncomplex beauty and shine, Legacy Exteriors and Roofing offers a variety of styles of wood deck that will be sure to please you and your family for years to come.

Wood Deck Features:
  • Natural Durability And Strength
  • Unparalleled elegance and beauty
  • Warm and inviting look
  • Time-tested materials made by nature
  • Pressure Treated Offers Improved Weathering Performance
Wood which is exposed outside to the weather is subject to repeated wetting and drying cycles that cause wood to swell and shrink, resulting in splitting, cracking and warping. Pressure treated lumber. is protected with ACQ preservative treatment, to provide long-term protection against decay, rot, termite attack and the effects of weathering.

Painting and Staining or Natural Weathering for Decks
Pressure treated lumber can be painted or stained to match any outdoor color scheme. High quality oil and latex based paints and stains are recommended. Water repellent coatings can be applied to enhance the long-term weathering performance. It is important that the wood is dry and free from surface deposits prior to applying any coating. Left uncoated ,or with clear water repellent coatings, P.T will initially weather to a natural brown color, eventually turning gray following long-term exposure (usually about 3 months.) to the sun.

Nails, Fasteners and Fittings
For the best results, stainless steel or hot dipped galvanized fasteners and fittings are recommended. Anti-corrosion coatings applied to fasteners and fittings in contact with treated wood will enhance long- term performance. Direct contact of pressure treated lumber with aluminum fasteners and fittings is not recommended.

Pressure Treated Deck Features:
  • Does not contain arsenic, chromium or other EPA classified hazardous chemicals
  • Provides long-term protection from rot, decay and termite attack
  • Can be used in environmentally sensitive settings
  • Wood scraps can be disposed of by ordinary trash collection
  • Offers a wider selection of treatable timber species
  • Easily painted or stained
  • Features a Limited Lifetime Warranty

COMPOSITE DECKS

Wood fencing and decks are the traditional, functional and esthetically beautiful choice, when building a fence or deck. But often there are durability and maintenance issues that come with using wood. Depending on the climate where you live, the toll that weathering can take on wood can be significant, and the maintenance to keep wood in good repair and looking good can also be significant. If you are looking for an inexpensive, long lasting and environmentally friendly alternative to wood, you can go with some of the new composite materials available to construct your fence or deck.

There are now two different kinds of beautiful, affordable composite decking available for you to choose from, when building your new fence or deck project. You can choose a recycled wood/plastic composite lumber, or a fiberglass reinforced plastic. Both of them are great, beautiful alternatives to wood for various reasons.

Recycled Wood/Plastic Composite Lumber
Let’s take a look at recycled wood/plastic composite lumber first. Recycled wood/plastic composite lumber is made of a 50/50 mix of recycled wood fiber from sawdust, and recycled plastic from garbage bags, PVC and other durable plastics. It is the primary use of most of the plastic garbage bags recycled today.

The material is mixed and formed into solid and hollow lumber-styled shapes that are used in building products such as fencing, decking, door and window frames and moldings. Because of the wood fiber and plastics, these composites are usually heavier than wood products, and more rigid because the wood fiber reinforces the plastic.

The primary reasons for choosing recycled wood/plastic over wood, are of course the environmentally-friendly recycling advantages, but also the fact that it is more durable, the plastics seal the wood against fungal rot, there are no poisonous chemicals as with treated wood and there is relatively zero maintenance.

Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic
The other great composite alternative to wood is a new material made from fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP). FRP is so strong it can be used as support beams in industrial applications and is colored throughout, so it is highly scratch resistant but also hides scratches almost completely. It will virtually keep its good looks for as long as you have it, with just an occasional washing.

The primary advantage to using FRP materials is that they are extremely strong and durable. They will not warp, split or crack and will last the life of your home with no maintenance. In contrast, wood is beautiful, but needs periodic maintenance, and even with that, typically lasts about 10-20 years in outdoor applications, such as fences and decks.

Primary Composite Deck Advantages:
  • Strong, long-lasting material
  • Multiple color choices
  • Less maintenance and upkeep than other materials
  • Safe, slip-resistant surface
  • Extremely realistic, natural-wood look
  • Better protection against mold, weathering, rot and decay
  • High-quality, scratch-resistant surface keeps your deck looking its best
  • No need to worry about painting
  • No termite damage

VINYL DECKS

At Legacy Exteriors and Roofing, we understand that your roof is a big investment. A roof is so much more than just shingles - as part of a larger system, it protects you, your family and your belongings from the elements. Legacy installs replacement roofs using high-quality roofing brands to ensure that your roof lasts as long as possible.

When is it time to replace my roof?
There are many signs that your roof needs to be replaced. Some of the most common things we see include:
  • Shingle Damage: Shingles are an essential part of your roofing system. When shingles become curled at the edges, cracked or begin to buckle, it may be time to have your roof replaced. Missing shingles are also a good sign that replacement is necessary.
  • Shingle Staining: Dark stains on your roof can be an indication of algae growing on your roof. Moss growth, mildew and mold on your shingles may also indicate damage.
  • Age: Most roofs are designed to last 20-25 years. If your roof is two decades old, we recommend that you consider replacement.
  • Granules: The granules on your shingles are designed to protect your roof. When you start see granules falling off into your gutter, it may be time to replace.
  • Interior Damage: If your roof is already leaking, you may see damage to your attic, ceiling or walls. Sometimes we also see blistering or peeling paint on the exterior of your house, also caused by leaking.
  • Energy Costs: If you notice that your energy bills are going up, your roof may not be well-insulated. Legacy can install an energy-efficient roof to reduce these costs.
  • Roof valleys: If unrepaired, rain, hail and other precipitation can flow through the valleys of your roof. If you notice damage in this area, we recommend a replacement roof.
  • Chimney flashing: It is best for chimney flashing to be made of metal flashing rather than tar or cement. If you have cement or tar, we recommend that you replace your roof.
Insurance Compensation:
When your roof is damaged by a storm, you are entitled to insurance compensation. Working with your insurance company can be stressful, involving paperwork and meeting with an adjuster. Legacy Exteriors and Roofing has many years of experience working with insurance companies. We will inspect your roof, providing a free estimate of all damages, which we share with your adjuster.
