How Insulation Impacts Your Home

The purpose of insulation material is to prevent excessive heat from escaping your home. If you find that your home is often too cold in the winter or too hot in the summer, your home may require an insulation upgrade.

Insulation R-Value

R-value is the measurment of how well certain building insulation materials, such as Blown-In Insulation, can resist heat. The higher the R-value, the greater the performance of the insulation.  Depending on where you live and the part of your home you’re insulating (walls, attic, or basement), you’ll need a different R-Value. Typical recommendations for exterior walls are R-13 to R-23, while R-30, R-38 and R-49 are common for ceilings and attic areas of the home.

The Different Types of Insulation

There are many different types of insulation with various pros and cons depending on your use case scenario.

Fiberglass insulation: Made from glass particulates and other raw materials which are melted and spun into fibers that resemble the texture of wool. It comes in batts, rolls, or Blown-in, and is commonly used in sidewalls, attics, crawl spaces, floors & basements.

Stone, rock or slag wool insulation: Made from rock, blast furnace slag, and other materials which are melted and spun into fibers to resemble the texture of wool. Mineral wool comes in batts, rolls, or can be blown-in. Like fiberglass, sidewalls, attics, crawl spaces, floors & basements.

Cellulose insulation: Composed mostly of cellulose fibers usually derived from recycled paperstock, or wood.  Cellulose insulation may also include binding agents.  Cellulose is chemically treated to resist fire, but the application process isn’t standardized, and there is evidence that the fire resistance wears off over time.

Spray foam insulation: Chemical-based insulation that is mixed to create foam, and applied with a sprayer in attics and into walls.  Closed cell foam retains its performance by maintaining its R-value under changing temperature whereas the R-value of fiberglas or cellulose insulation will drop as the temperature decreases.  Additionally, closed cell form adds rigidity and achieves a higher R-value with less space and is air and moisture impenetrable
